HadleyStilwell Introduces New Clothing Line for Breastfeeding Mothers Returning to Work

HadleyStilwell, a new Seattle-based designer and online retailer of women's clothing, is pleased to introduce a unique collection of dresses, shirts and jackets that are tailored to meet the needs of working mothers.

Named after Harris's daughter, the HadleyStilwell collection is for mothers seeking well-tailored pieces that integrate with their existing wardrobes. With just a quick change of accessories, women can achieve their professional look for the boardroom, without sacrificing comfort when they're relaxing at home on the weekends. HadleyStilwell clothes are the wardrobe staples women reach for – from the new, nursing mom who needs quick access to breasts for pumping, to the mother of young children who may find herself frequently running from desk to after-school activities each week.

The new collection was designed by mompreneur Holli Harris, who like many mothers before her returned to work after maternity leave shouldering new time constraints, competing priorities and a large dose of sleep deprivation.

Harris ducked out of meetings to pump; pumped in parking garages; and arrived at business dinners carrying the telltale black bag. She quickly understood why a joint study by the National Women's Health Resource Center and Medela brea women's coats st pump company found that 32 percent of mothers in the U.S. stop breastfeeding 7 weeks after returning to work.

Caught in a constant quest for increased efficiency during work hours, Harris hit on the fact that in addition to the logistical challenge of pumping in cars and planes while in business attire, she was adding precious minutes to pump sessions by having to get undressed.

"If I can minimize the challenge of pumping, or nursing, at work through well-tailored designs that enable quick and discreet access to breasts -- and it helps new mothers to breastfeed that much longer -- then I've accomplished my goal. It's really much larger than the clothes – it's about empowering women to succeed at both career and motherhood," Harris says.

Harris approaches the design process by creating clothes that women want to wear, and that just happen to accommodate nursing and pumping. Indeed, some early customers have been women who are not breastfeeding at all, but who simply like the design details, coordinating colors and knit fabrics.

"I test drove the Signature Dress and Jacket myself at a board meeting, and no one knew it was anything other than a suit," Harris says. "When challenged, my female confidantes couldn't locate the hidden zippers. Then a few hours later I was in a plane bathroom pumping away in close quarters with clothes intact – mission accomplished!"

The HadleyStilwell collection is available online at http://www.HadleyStilwell.com. The women modeling the clothes on the home page of the company's website are real mothers involved in various careers. HadleyStilwell profiles their stories, and offers their tips for working moms.

HadleyStilwell's website also is a resource for new moms who are looking for resources about breastfeeding after returning to work. A section called "Milk Notes" provides advice on nursing and pumping, including a chart of the breastfeeding phases; tips on presenting the business case for breastfeeding to your boss; and the art of pumping in a car. Visitors to the site can also sign up for weekly Milk Tweets via Twitter, through which Harris shares vetted sources for new mother information.

There are also plans for personal shoppers and celebrity stylists to give online workshops on how to pick outfits which make the most of your appearance when attending job interviews, weddings, parties and other special occasions.

Launch content focuses on key seasonal dilemmas such as what bra size your wife might be, or what the perfect gift for her at Christmas is. With this useful 'how to' narrative, the channel aims to attract the attention of other consumers that might not be on Debenhams.com through interest generated by social media.

Said Debenhams online trading director, Simon Forster: "Our online TV channel is a brilliant way for our customers to get style and beauty advice, see the latest fashions and just be entertained. You can see it on our website, through our iPhone app, on Youtube and coming soon - in our stores"

Lingerie market in a state of flux

It is an accepted fact of life that consumers do not need as many items of clothing as they buy - and nowhere is this clearer than in women's lingerie. They buy because they want to, because the style looks right under certain clothes, and because it fits them.

The big issue now facing manufacturers, brands and retailers is how they continue to relate to the genuine desires and emotional wants of their female consumer base.

In its report 'Global market review of lingerie and intimate apparel - forecasts to 2014', just-style estimates that the value of the global lingerie market rose by just 2.6% to US$29.92bn between 2004 and 2007.

The reasons for this low growth include ageing populations in the developed world, fierce retail competition driving prices down, and the continued movement of production to lower cost countries. The report says that by the end of 2007, clothing prices (including those for lingerie) were 4% lower than they were in 1995.

By garment category, bras account for 56% of global retail sales, briefs at 32%, and daywear and shapewear (corsetry) taking the remaining 12%.

Brand marketers should note that although global growth has come from the developing world (up 8.1% between 2004 and 2007 and led by the Indian sub-continent), the biggest opportunities are still in Western Europe and North America, which between them account for 65% of the lingerie market.

Having said this, the engine for market growth in the future will be in the developing countries like China and India, where more merchandise will be sold but at lower unit prices.

Just-style's global market review estimates that the retail market for lingerie will grow to US$33.57bn by 2014 - a rise of 12.2% over 2007.

However, there's no doubt that the market is crowded, and recent industry events have seen a number of players review their market positioning.

Over the last two and a half years, three of the industry majors, namely Sara Lee, VF Corporation and Warnaco have either exited their European lingerie operations or excited the intimates business completely.

These events point to some major changes taking place in the lingerie industry, namely: the dramatic changes in ownership of the big multinationals, and changes in the methods of distribution of lingerie to the final consumer (specifically forward integration by brands into retail).

Lingerie, however, still has a plethora of 'real' brands, especially in Western Europe. Elsewhere in the world (in regions without 'organised' retail distribution), much of the lingerie sold is anonymous merchandise sold from market stalls.

As a consequence, the report suggests that each player in this market must ask whether it wants to be a designer, a brand or retailer? And it must identify its strategic core competence.

In the long term, it seems likely that more and more lingerie brands will venture into retail, partly because the independent boutiques are getting fewer so their customer base is declining, but also because the boutiques are unable to stock and show the wider ranges that brands offer.

But it is also appears that while the multinational Tips: Find Street Fashion Online(may be you can find what you want on the oasap.com) s have failed to dominate, the smaller brands will continue to compete for space in a very cluttered market.

Across the lingerie market worldwide, the market as a whole at retail has grown by US$770m. Of that total, brands have grown by 62%, retail own labels have grown by 53%, and anonymous merchandise has fallen by 16%.

This has convinced just-style that, whatever statements various international brands may happen to make, there is no future for a 'one-size-fits-all' approach to selling lingerie around the world.

Just-style's 'Global market review of lingerie and intimate apparel - forecasts to 2014' is available to purchase via calling +44 (0)1527 573 604, emailing store(at)just-style.com or visiting http://www.just-style.com/lingeriereport.

Methodist Mission Home Announces Newly Renovated Free Birth Mother Housing Facility Is Open

Methodist Mission Home recently finished renovations to their Maternity Center providing a free, safe place to live for expectant birth mothers. The Maternity Center is located on a beautiful 25-acre campus with other amenities such as a swimming pool, computer lab and recreation room. At the new facility, birth mothers can also take advantage of the many other free birth mother services MMH has to offer. "Whether you choose to live in our new Maternity Center, or in your own community, we offer you professional guidance and compassionate support, leaving you reassured that our team is here to help you with anything you may need," says Cathy Walker, Development Director at MMH.

The Tips: Find Street Fashion Online(may be you can find what you want on the oasap.com) professionals at Methodist Mission Home know that finding yourself unexpectedly pregnant can be a scary and uncertain time. It's easy for women to feel overwhelmed when facing the reality of an unplanned pregnancy. There are so many questions, so many decisions. When a young woman knows her choices, she can make the best decision for herself and her baby. Adoption is a wonderful alternative to raising a child when the mother is not ready or unable to care for the baby herself. During the months leading up to the delivery, MMH offers a save haven for pregnant women considering adoption at their Maternity Center where birth mothers can live for free.

Birth mothers living in Methodist Mission Home's new Maternity Center have access to many other helpful services that will prepare them for the months ahead including the months after the adoption has taken place. Each Maternity Center apartment has a fully equipped kitchen, a spacious living area with a TV and opens into a peaceful patio area. Easy access to the city bus line is available, and counselors help birth mothers with transportation to all doctors' appointments. Women staying here, or birth mothers who live off campus, have access not only to information about their pregnancy and childbirth, but also many educational resources designed to help the women improve their own lives as well.

MMH offers life skill training, budgeting and money maintenance education, career development, vocational evaluations, job readiness training and job placement services. That way, after the baby has been delivered and the adoption process is complete, the birth mothers are prepared to go back to school or find a job.

During a birth mother's pregnancy, whether she lives on campus or not, MMH also provides financial assistance with adoption and pregnancy-related expenses such as medical care, maternity clothing, living expenses, transportation and counseling services; bi-lingual counseling is available as well. The women can also enjoy the company of other women going through the same experience and look to them for support as well. During the time leading up to this important decision, counselors will work with the birth mothers to ensure that whatever decision they make is the right one for each individual woman.

If a birth mother does decide that adoption is the right choice for her and her baby, women at MMH are given the option to choose the adoptive family that will raise their child. Cathy Walker adds, "We help you choose the adoptive family for your baby from a list of families who have passed a rigorous pre-screening process. Birth mothers can meet the family to reassure the women that their baby will be raised in a loving household." The women can also work with the adoptive family to arrange future plans for staying in touch after the adoption is finalized.

After the adoption, many birth mothers go through a range of emotions and feelings. MMH continues to provide counseling to birth mothers even after the adoption, so that the women feel good about their decision in order to move on to the next phase in their own lives. It is important that the mothers have peace of mind, knowing they made a choice that was best for their baby in giving their child a life of love and opportunity that they themselves were not sufficiently prepared to provide at that point in time.

There is no cost to the birth mother for any of MMH's services, regardless of what her final decision may be. Birth mothers cannot make their final decision until the baby is at least two days old. During that important time, counselors at MMH will help the women review their choices again. Professionals at MMH strive to make sure every woman makes the best choice she can for herself and her child. Finally, birth mothers can continue to count on the agency's help long after their babies are living with the adoptive parents. MMH offers support as women face the grieving process and other emotions that are common after the adoption. Methodist Mission Home has been established for more than a century, and they will continue to help pregnant women facing one of the most important decisions of their lives.

Beat the Heat With Safe Exercises

With the majority of the country experiencing a dangerous heat wave these past few weeks and no immediate relief in sight, Lady of America Franchise Corporation wants to make sure you beat the heat ― and stay safe ― when it comes to exercising.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), heat-related deaths and illness are preventable, yet annually many people succumb to extreme heat. Though the elderly and ill are at great risk from the heat, so are healthy young people because they do not recognize the dangers of exercising in hot weather ― especially hot, humid weather.

People suffer heat-related illness when their bodies are unable to compensate and properly cool themselves. The body normally cools itself by sweating. When the humidity is high, sweat does not evaporate as quickly, preventing the body from releasing heat quickly. Other conditions related to heat-related risk include age, obesity, fever, dehydration heart disease, mental illness, poor circulation, sunburn and prescription drug and alcohol use.

Lady of America wants you to follow some key rules for exercising in the extreme heat to avoid injury.

Stay hydrated. Before exercise, drink 8 ounces of water 30 minutes prior to the start of your workout. During exercise, drink 3 to 6 ounces of water every 15 minutes. After exercise, drink 8 to 16 ounces of water within 30 minutes following your workout.
Dress appropriately. Wear lightweight, moisture-wicking or loose-fitting clothing that allows the sweat to evaporate from your skin. Choose lighter colors because they won't absorb as much heat from the sun, and wear a hat or a visor to keep the sun out of your eyes. To keep your feet dry, choose lightweight cotton socks.
Watch your heart rate. When training in the heat, you don't need to work as hard to elevate your heart rate. Closely monitor your heart rate during outdoor exercise; adjust your pace accordingly.

TheBeautyPlace.com helps Women Seeking Advice on Controlling Heat Temperatures on Professional Flat Irons

TheBeautyPlace.com knows that the flat iron is one of the savviest hair styling inventions to date, allowing women to stay in style and save time. Today, professional flat irons are the healthy alternative to ultimate styling and protection.

Women are continuously seeking advice on what the best temperature is to iron their hair, and that highly depends on their hair type and length. The recommended temperatures for flat iron styling are 380-410 degrees for thick, coarse hair, 360-380 degrees for normal hair, which is hair of medium thickness and length and below 360 degrees for fine or damaged hair. Higher temperatures can destroy hair that is already damaged or very thin while lower temperatures can do the trick without compromising its strength and elasticity.

Designer Jeans in an Unexpected Flavor - Grp.E Introduces Chronic Ice Neon Yellow Wash

Blending Chronic Ice's new "Tea Partay" campaign and Grp.E Jeans' new 2012 Summer Collection of cocktail-inspired denim washes seemed like the perfect fit to San Francisco fashion designer Tommy Pham. That's why he named Grp.E's new neon yellow jeans "Chronic Ice" after the antioxidant-rich hemp tea's all-natural Classic Lemon flavor.

"Chronic Ice and Grp.E are two brands cut from the same cloth, so to speak," says Tommy Pham. "We're both supporters of the party culture. Grp.E's sexy, comfortable jeans and Chronic Ice's refreshing health drink both help partiers feel good all night long."

The main ingredient in Chronic Ice beverages is hemp seed powder. Considered a super food, hemp seed gives drinkers a lift, without getting them high. And, in addition to hemp, Chronic Ice is packed with other healthy nutrients every party person needs to feel great.

"These jeans are hot! And we're ecstatic about Tommy's new line—especially the Chronic Ice designer jeans," said Greenlight Beverages spokesman Jamal Weathers. "What an honor to be include women's jackets online d in Grp.E Jeans 2012 Summer Collection."

The neon yellow hue of Grp.E's newest wash will be available just in time for summer, as people everywhere trade in their gloomy, dark colors for sunny new digs. All of the designer jeans in Grp.E's 2012 Summer Collection are cheekily named after adult beverages, like the Blue-tini, Vodka-Cranberry, and Mojito.

The new jeans will debut at Grp.E's Make-A-Wish benefit trunk show starting at 7pm on Friday, May 4, 2012 at 965 Mission Street (@ 5th Street), Suite 205 in San Francisco. Admission is free. RSVP is requested at http://grpe-summer2012.eventbrite.com/. Guests are encouraged to come thirsty, as the Chronic Ice and innovative adult beverages will be flowing all evening.

Greenlight Beverages, makers of Chronic Ice, recently introduced three new flavors of premium hemp drinks. They include The Grape Escape and Peach Perfection hemp teas and the nation's first hemp soda, Chronic Ice Ginger Ale.

The new flavors are wildly popular. In fact, all 105,000 cans produced for the first run sold out just days after hitting shelves. Bartenders say they are having fun mixing Chronic Ice in inventive new drinks, like the "Sir Chron," "The Vonic" and "Chron Island Iced Tea."

"We think the new jeans will be just as popular as the new Chornic Ice flavors," said Weathers. "And mixing Grp.E jeans and Chronic Ice is definitely all in good taste."

Chronic Ice hemp teas can be found at convenience stores across the nation and Grp.E jeans can be found online at http://www.grp-e.com and at boutiques across the San Francisco Bay Area.

Holiday Packing – A Fascinating At-a-Glance Guide From Direct Travel Insurance

What are the weirdest items ever confiscated at airport security? Well, they include a jar of human eyeballs and a chameleon designed as a hat, according to the new 'Ultimate Guide to Packing' from travel insurance experts Direct Travel.

The handy guide is full of amazing information and helpful hints. Holidaymakers can find out, for example, which airlines charge the most for excess baggage – up to ?37 a kilo.

They can also check which objects they should pack in their hand or hold luggage. While tennis rackets and golf clubs go in the hold, travel irons are fine in either while matches must be carried on board. Lighters are banned altogether.

Direct Travel's easy-to-read Pack Your Bags infographic reveals that women tend to pack twice as many clothes as they need. For a two-week holiday, it seems female travellers typically take six bikinis but only wear three, for example. That's where the step-by-step guide to packing might come in useful, with advice on how to fill a suitcase to fit in as much as possible.

The guide also includes a reminder of the quantity of liquids allowed in hand luggage, helpful information to check before leaving the house to avoid the annoyance of having to throw away bot women's jackets tles of sun lotion or drinks at the airport.

Pack Your Bags has plenty more fascinating facts and figures to get travellers off to the best start on their trip. Two very simple tips are to check the latest weather forecast for the destination rather than rely on a brochure, and find out if laundry facilities could help cut down on baggage.

When all the packing is done, travel insurance* will make sure that holidaymakers are properly covered should bags happen to go astray.

Anyone tempted to try to smuggle their pet chameleon into the country, however, should be warned that a 17-year-old girl's attempt to do just that by wearing it on her head was rumbled by officials at Manchester Airport in 2002.

Lizards aside, packing should be easier with the Direct Travel infographic. Bon voyage!

Latest Post from Fitness Tips for Women Blog, GetFitDaily.com, Announces Information on How Much Cardio People Really Need

GetFitDaily.com is one of the world's most visited Fitness Tips blogs. Offering daily tips and advice to women, information can be read directly from their blog, or via a daily digest email.

Today, Stacy Carlo at GetFitDaily published her latest post, titled "How Much Cardio Do You Really Need?"

Fitness fans can access the new blog post here:

http://getfitdaily.com/how-much-cardio-do-you-really-need/

In her latest blog post, Stacy mentions that she can remember her own Mother getting ready for her four-nights-a-week aerobics class.

"She'd wear her bright purple leotard with the skinny pink belt and complete her outfit with a pink terry cloth headband and pink legwarmers," she says.

She mentions that, while her Mother looked great, she spent at least ten hours a week at the gym and women's coats was bored of her workout routine.

Stacy now admits that the world is aware that endless amounts of cardio are not the best way to lose or maintain weight.

She directly quotes from an article on LiveStrong.com, which states that a person needs around thirty minutes of moderate-intensity cardio four times a week or twenty five minutes of more intense cardio three times per week.

This ensures good cardio health as well as the ability to maintain a healthy weight.

The site also makes a good case for the use of interval training.

"An exercise is classified as moderate-intensity if it causes your heart rate to speed up and leads you to break a sweat but allows you to have a conversation," Stacy writes, quoting directly from the LiveStrong.com article.

She then explains that more and more research indicates that huge amounts of cardio are not needed. In fact, one recent study claims to have proven that ten minutes of cardio actually provides the same benefits as twenty minutes.

"Take that information and add it to what we know about the benefits of interval training and you have a winning plan for getting fit in as little time as possible," Stacy concludes.

“Counterfeit Crime is Rife, so Shows Such as Crime Patrol 2012 and CrimeWatch are Popular” says Watch Retailer Watch Hub as They Launch Video Against Fake Watch Companies

With television programmes such as Crime Patrol 2012 and CrimeWatch a popular staple of the television schedule, the public are becoming more and more wary of the lengths counterfeiters go to produce a fake or replica designer men's watches.

According to the recently published Intellectual Property Crime (IPC) Report (July 2012), the number of watches investigated for counterfeit have increased from 2011, but clothing still remains the most reported counterfeit item for the third year running.

Many may think that by purchasing items such as mens watches in a physical store on the high street, they are less at risk of inadvertently buying a fake than if they were to purchase online. It would come as a surprise then, that the IPC Report shows that fake products are just as likely to be reported in physical stores as they are on websites and web auction sites. In the period between 1st April 2011 and 31st March 2012, 1004 fake watches were seized by the UK Border Force at airports alone.

One of the main reasons for counterfeiting goods is reported to be for financial gain, but the IPC Report states that counterfeiting is often linked women's jackets to organised crime and other criminality as opposed to a stand alone crime. Although the price of a knock off product may look appealing, there can often be dangers involved - especially with electrical equipment as they are often not wired correctly.

Programmes such as Crime Petrol 2012 not only help to catch criminals and help the progress of police investigations, but they also raise awareness on how to avoid falling victim to certain crimes, for example purchasing fake products.

During a previous Crime Patrol Live episode in 2011, the presenters showed the audience how to tell fake products from authentic ones, using mens watches as an example.

As a rule, it is best not to purchase online as there is no way of inspecting the product before it's been paid for. The Crime Patrol 2012 team advised the audience to conduct research to familiarise themselves with the features and signature elements of the brand or designer they were wishing to buy - that way if a watch does not carry one of these features, it is clearly a knock off.

A leading UK retailer of mens watches, Watch Hub has followed in these crime prevention television programmes' footsteps and launched a YouTube video advising viewers how they can protect themselves against scam companies.

Robin Kamal, co-founder of Watch Hub said, "The aim of this video is to make consumers aware of the risks of purchasing women's and men's watches online by telling them what to look out for and how they can avoid wasting their money on a knock off product. It's the common thing of, 'if it looks too good to be true, it probably is'"

NBA Player Monta Ellis’ ME8Foundation Provides Thanksgiving Meals to the Women Shelters of the Stewpot Community Services

Never wavering from his beloved hometown of Jackson, Mississippi, Monta Ellis' ME8Foundation extends their outreach by providing Thanksgiving meals to the Stewpot Community Services, women shelters– Matt House (343 Adelle Street), Sims House (1100 W. Capital Street) and Flowers House (35 Livingston Street).

In 1981, representatives from seven churches in Jackson, Mississippi came together across denominational lines, to discuss a problem they all had in common - meeting the consistent requests for food and assistance from downtown Jackson's poor and homeless. These seven churches came toget women's jackets her and created what is known today as Stewpot Community Services. In 1983, a survey conducted by social service organizations in Jackson indicated the city's greatest need was shelter for homeless women and children. Stewpot accepted the challenge to provide such a shelter, and opened Sims House, so named in honor of one of its greatest contributors, as a transitional shelter for homeless women and children, followed by the Matt House and Flowers house. The shelters provide the families with the comforts of home as each of them strive to find employment and a permanent residence.

"My family and I have so much to be thankful for during this holiday season and it brings us great joy to give back to what I will always consider my home," says Monta Ellis. "It is gratifying to provide meals to the families during the Thanksgiving holiday and put smiles on the face of women and children. The Stewpot Community Services is one of Jackson's greatest gifts and I applaud them on their commitment to the city of Jackson."

Due to the Thanksgiving Holiday, the meals will be delivered on Tuesday, November 20, 2012.

Hello From Nova Scotia: Learning About Native Heritage At The Bear River

About an hour after my departure from Annapolis Royal after a beautiful drive along the shoreline of the Annapolis Basin and through the early fall colours of the Bear River Valley, (also known as "Little Switzerland". I arrived at the Bear River First Nation Heritage and Cultural Centre. I was greeted by Wanda Joudry-Finigan and Robert (Robbie) McEwan, while Frederick Harlow was manning the cash register. All are members of the Bear River First Nation, and Wanda and Robbie proceeded to celebrate my arrival with a special welcome song.

Wanda explained that the song invites our mutual relatives, grandfathers and ancestors to join us at this occasion. The lobby of the Centre holds various artifacts and a Heritage Gallery that pays homage to current and former Chiefs and Elders of the Bear River First Nation. Wanda pointed out present Chief Frank Meuse Junior who also operates a lodge for adults and youth alike who wish to learn about the Mi'kmaq culture. Another image was of Agnes Potter, a celebrated leader and respected Elder of the Bear River First Nation.

Then I was invited to view a brief movie about Willie Meuse, Frank's grandfather, shown in footage from the 1930s on the Bear River. The film also highlighted the construction and launching of the first birch bark canoe built since 1927. The launching took place in 2004 and speaks to the importance of the ancestors.

We left the vestibule and entered a large multi-purpose room housing a variety of interpretive displays about the life and history of the Mi'kmaq First Nation. This room is also used for theatre productions, games of sports for the youth, community card parties, holiday feasts and presentations. Frederick joined me and gave me an overview of the birch bark canoe. He explained that the canoe weighs about 90 to 95 pounds and was constructed using authentic historical canoe-building methods used in the area. The canoe is a sea-going canoe, evidenced by the high rise in the middle. Fresh-water canoes do not feature a rise in the middle of the canoe.

The vessel is constructed of various types of wood including ash and birch and the outside is covered with birch bark. Any potential openings in the canoe's skin are patched up with a mixture of spruce gum and bear grease. Canoes used to be the main form of transportation for the First Nations People and their navigation skills, fishing and hunting knowledge helped the French settlers when they first came to this area in the 1600s. This life-size canoe was made by Todd Labrador and Cory Ryan who is a seventh generation descendent of Malti Pictou, a well-known Bear River Mi'kmaq guide. Before Cory, he was the last person to make a birch bark canoe in the area.

The next exhibit featured a variety of arts and crafts that are produced here using Mi'kmaq artistic traditions. Robbie came over to give me more insight into some of the local arts and crafts. He explained that leather is worked to produce mittens, jackets, dresses, moccasins and other items. Dreamcatchers are an important symbol to the Mi'kmaq. With their intricate web-like design they are hung to catch dreams floating through the night air. There is a saying that dreamcatchers let the good dreams through but protect you from the bad dreams.

Jewellery is made using a variety of glass beads, bone beads as well as imitation sinew. In the past moose tendons were used to produce the pendants and bracelets. Decorated deer and moose hide are available for purchase as well. Robert indicated that he recently made an ornate dress for a native chief in Newfoundland. His artistic skills are evidenced by some of the most impressive pieces of work: Robert showed me a decorative jewellery box that he is currently working on. The box is made of birch bark and porcupine quills, bordered with sweet grass whose scent I was a women's jackets ble to smell. He explained that porcupine quills are easily removed from the animal, and they are essentially used to stitch an elaborate design. For each quill a hole is poked and the quill is pulled through. By the time this item is finished, Robert will have invested over 200 hours to produce the elaborate pattern on this decorative box.

Wanda joined us and took me to a display of a wigwam to explain certain rituals and conventions that would be adhered to in First Nations encampments. Visitors would be invited to sit in the most honourable space in the home or wigwam. The same would go for children so they would be able to see everything to the left and to the right of them in order to be able to learn. During winter mats made from rush would be used for insulation against the cold. Baskets were hand- made in order to harvest scallop, clams, or mussels. Each of these particular baskets could hold up to 10 pounds of seafood. Other baskets made from ash were used for potato and apple picking. These baskets were hand-made in large quantities in the 1900s as a major means of economic survival in changing times. Today these baskets are sold as decorative items.

The tipi also features a variety of furs, including lynx, rabbit, mink, red fox and silver fox. During the 1920s and 1930s silver foxes were a real fashion craze in England and many women had a fox fur, complete with head and legs, draped around their necks as a statement of elegance. The fox' head would be equipped with a clasp so it could be clipped onto the lapel of the lady's coat.

I learned that the wigwam is made of birch bark. Wigwams were lightweight, which made them easy to move from one location to another and water-resistant. Encampments would be set up near the mouth of rivers, which would provide a plentiful opportunity for food and means of travel. A large part of native diet consisted of fish; the rest was made up of berries, fruits and meats. Often fishing weirs were used for catching eels. Wanda explained that in the last few years about 800 encampments have been found in Nova Scotia with more than 4000 artifacts dating back 2,500 to 4,000 years.

Mi'kmaq hunting traditions included bear traps that were baited with fish. Once the animal was caught, women would remove the guts, the hide and the sinews and carry it back to the camp to prepare it. Excess meat and fat would be scraped off the skin with scraping tools, stones or shells. Wanda informs me that women were very highly respected in First Nations society, as they were life givers. Meals were cooked in a hollowed-out log that held red-hot stones that had been heated over a fire. Water would be poured over the food and the hot stones to cook the meal. Spices were gathered in the forest, and instead of potatoes a plant called the Jerusalem artichoke would be served with the meat. Fish and meat were dried or smoked, and eggs were gathered from marsh birds.

We moved over to a display on Mi'kmaq language and Wanda mentioned that there were 7 Mi'kmaq districts, each with their own chief. The Bear River Reservation is located in a place called "Kespukwik", meaning "where the water stops flowing", referring to the Bear River flowing into the Annapolis Basin. Mi'kmaq language is based on action verbs, and pronouns are important indicators of belonging and possession. For instance, the words "mother" or "sister" can never be said by themselves, they always require a pronoun to indicate whose mother we are talking about. The Mi'kmaq words would say "your mother", "my mother", or" his/her mother" etc.

At the next display we saw a 1936 picture of Wanda's great-grandmother, Sarah Fossey who lived until 1961 to the ripe old age of 101. Wanda has fond memories of Sarah who used to bring her grandchildren and great-grandchildren oranges as a special treat. Sarah was captured in a movie from the 1930s that was displayed at the Bear River First Nation Heritage and Cultural Centre. Wanda was overwhelmed when she first saw moving images of her great-grandmother in the movie.

We also discussed life as a Mi'kmaq today. Wanda explained that Mi'kmaq society was matriarchal until the arrival of the first Europeans. In recent years, from the 1920s to the 1990, the government instituted a policy of residential schools where young native children were taken away from their families and taught the "white man's ways'. This led to a significant loss in culture and heritage, women's status eroded as a result and Mi'kmaq family structure suffered. The government wanted to force native children to "integrate" into mainstream society and in the process an ancient way of life was destroyed. Siblings were often not allowed to talk to one another and families were torn apart. Many of the native children suffered from mental, physical and sexual abuse in the residential schools. As a result of these policies, today many elders are learning the Mi'kmaq language from the younger generation.

Today there is a counter-trend where young First Nations people are rediscovering their language, culture and heritage. Of the conditions at the Bear River Reservation Wanda says that it is a managed forest and there is no poverty on the reserve, which holds about 100 people. Wanda herself has lived off the reserve for her entire life and has been self-efficient.

Wanda also explained that having "native status" is an important issue in First Nations communities. Native status confers certain benefits in terms of health care, taxation and schooling. Bill C31, introduced in 1985, improved native women's status in the sense that they could pass native status on to their first generation children, even if the children were from a mixed native/non-native marriage. Men on the other hand can pass on native status indefinitely through the generations, even if they marry a non-native wife. This often creates economic inequality and friction within the same family where one set of cousins could have native status whereas another cousin would not officially be considered native. Even fairly recent legislation prolongs the European tradition of favouring male bloodlines.

Wanda gave me the names of several books that would provide further education about First Nations life and communities and when I said goodbye, she generously gave me two books to read as a present: "L'sitkuk – The Story of the Bear River Mi'kmaw Community" by Darlene Ricker, and "We Were Not Savages – A Mi'kmaq Perspective on the Collision between European and Native American Civilizations" by Daniel N. Paul, excellent reading material to educate myself further about native culture and history. As a parting gift she gave me a handcrafted medicine pouch that she had made herself, an example of the Mi'kmaq tradition of generosity and peacefulness.

I thanked Wanda and the entire team at the Bear River First Nation Heritage and Cultural Centre for their most interesting introduction to Mi'kmaq heritage and culture and resolved to read these books soon to educate myself. I started driving down the hill and all the people congregated at the local Bear River Band Office waved goodbye to me. It was time for me to continue my drive along the Evangeline Trail to tonight's final destination: Yarmouth.

A Beautiful Home Is The Best Incentive To Buy

When real estate sales are slow, people start talking about buyer incentives – a little something extra to get people to buy your house. In the current market, with prices flat and sales slow, buyer incentives are getting a lot of play in the local real estate news. We've seen stories about sellers who are willing to throw in a big screen television, luxury cruises – even a brand new car. Before you rush out and buy a boat to sweeten the deal on the home you're trying to sell, check with your realtor. Chances are that he'll tell you what real estate professionals all over the country already know – the best incentive to buy is a beautiful home.

If your home has been on the market for a few weeks without attracting interest or offers, there could be any number of reasons. One of the most common is that the house just lacks sparkle – that special something that captures buyers at first glance. Adding that sparkle is neither as hard nor as expensive as you might suppose. Before you consider incentives that might attract buyers, take a hard look at your house. Here's a five step plan for making your home its own buyer's incentive.

1. Enlist the help of your realtor.

No one has a better grasp of what is keeping your home from selling than the professional whose job it is to sell it. Your realtor has been walking people through your house and is in the best position to hear their comments about it. Ask! Remember, your realtor's living depends on getting the best price possible for your home. You can expect an honest appraisal of what steps you can take to increase the appeal of your home and get it on the fast track to sell. Some questions you might ask your realtor are:

- What do people like least about our house?
- What improvements can I make in (name your price range) that will increase its appeal?
- What low cost steps can I take to make my home more appealing to buyers?
- Is our asking price reasonable for this neighborhood?
- What features have been most important to people who have bought houses from you?

2. Do a walkthrough of your property as if you were a buyer.

Look at your home through a buyer's eyes. Pull up out front and study your home from the curb. Is the view appealing? Walk up to the house and keep your eyes moving around the property. What do you see? Stand on the front stoop or porch long enough for someone to open the door. What does that give you time to notice? Proceed through your house room by room in the same way. Look at your rooms from angles that you normally don't use. You might be surprised at the things you notice that you've never seen before.

3. Do a full-scale de-clutter and cleaning.

Your first step in preparing your house to sell should be a full-scale roof to basement cleaning. Get rid of all the personal belongings that make your home "yours". Rent a storage unit for those things you don't want to discard – but get them out of your house. Family pictures, knick-knacks on the mantelpiece, the knitting bag tucked between the sofa and the wall – they may seem neat, tidy and homey to you. Their effect on prospective buyers, though, is far different. Even if they don't recognize exactly WHY the home doesn't feel like it fits them, they'll feel it.

At the same time, take care of any repairs around the house – especially visible ones. Replace cracked or stained floors, repaint walls that show stains, fix the caulking around the bathtub. Do the same outside – repair shutters, trim trees and shrubs, give the driveway a new coat of sealer. Your aim is to make your house look as shiny and new as possible.

4. Hire a landscaper or exterior designer.

The first impression your house makes will be the most important incentive your house has to offer. It can be surprisingly inexpensive to turn your home from ho-hum to wow! Some outside improvements can even have a positive effect on the interior of your house. Here are a few of the most common low-cost improvements you can make outdoors to make your home more attractive.

- Remove high bushes and shrubs that are close to the house. They'll make the front of your house look cleaner from the outside – and let more light into the house for brighter rooms.

- Define the borders of the yard in some way. Brick or stone borders around gardens and along walks give a neat, uniform appearance.

- Add an outdoor patio space or spruce up the existing one. Outdoor entertaining and play space is a very big draw – as long as it's neat, attractive and useful. If your home has a patio, make sure that it's spotless. Invest in new cushions and umbrella for the patio set and if there is a grill, make it sparkle.

- Flowering borders, hanging baskets and container gardens can all add to the attraction factor of the outdoors, but be careful not to clutter. Make sure that any flowering women's jackets areas are well-maintained. Containers and baskets are especially good for this – you can always turn them or replace them if flowers and plants start looking less than fresh.

5. Invest in small home improvements that make a big difference.

Outdated kitchens and bathrooms are the two biggest detractors in the eyes of buyers. It's not surprising, then, that improvements in the kitchen and the bathroom are the ones that are most likely to be reflected in the selling price of the house. Take the money that you're considering using as a buyer incentive and invest it in your kitchen and bathroom. Some of the most effective kitchen and bath improvements include:

- Fresh paint/wall treatments in either room
- New floors in either room
- New appliances in the kitchen
- Resurfacing or replacing the counters and cabinets in the kitchen
- Replacing the tub enclosure in the bathroom
- New fixtures and sink in the bathroom or kitchen
- New lighting in either room

Before you start figuring out what you can offer as an incentive to buyers, think about how that money can be used to add value to your home. The more attractive your home is, the more likely it is to sell without any additional sweeteners in the mix. Remember, a beautiful home is the best incentive to buy.

San Francisco 49ers Tickets - How Are The 49ers Like The Dawn Of The Roman Empire? Part I

The 49ers are 4-8 right now, just barely holding onto a glimmer of hope that they might be able to overtake the Phoenix Cardinals for the division title and a chance at selling San Francisco 49ers tickets to the playoffs.

It has certainly not been a women's coats n easy season for this embattled bunch, with many changes in the hierarchy, many different leaders emerging and retreating, subterfuge and power plays behind the scenes that would make an episode of the West Wing seem like an episode of Blue's Clues. As we enter the 13th week of the NFL season, the 49ers are starting to look more and more like the dawn of the Roman Empire. Here's how:

The Old QB Dynasties of Montana/Walsh, Young/Seifert are Greece and the Early Roman Republic, Respectively

The problem with Ancient Rome was that it was always trying to live up to, as well as model its society after, the Ancient Greeks. In much the same way, we can equate the current 49ers situation with that of the beginning of Imperial Rome, after the Ancient Greek and Roman Republic have had their heyday and disappeared into history. Joe Montana/Bill Walsh's 1980s success is on the same par as Ancient Greece, and Steve Young/George Seifert's success in the early 1990s corresponds to the rise of the Roman Republic.

The last thread of the Republic, Bryant Young, who helped win a Super Bowl with the 49ers in 1994, retired before the 2008 season, forever snapping the link between these glorious days of yore and the current turmoil in San Francisco. The current 49ers would like to emulate the success of their wonderful history, but doing so has not been easy. The sequel is hardly ever as good as the original in cinema, and the same holds true for civilization and 49ers eras.

Mike Nolan is Julius Caesar
Here we're going to embody the transition from powerful quarterback/receiver combos to power running game with the succession from George Seifert to Mike Nolan, although you could also throw Steve Mariucci in there as well, if you'd like. Here we will keep with Nolan for simplicity's sake.

The throwing-running switch is, in essence, the same kind of radical switch that Caesar performed when he declared himself dictator of Rome, an emperor, when Rome used to be a Republic with no singular king. This is not a perfect analogy, but here me out. The switch from passing offense to running offense is like the switch from republic to dictatorship.

Also, there are character similarities between Mike Nolan and Julius Caesar. Mike Nolan comes from a strong line of coaches, a successful coaching tree and a very famous coat of arms (the suit), so, like Caesar, he's the football version of a Roman Patrician, an elite, ruling class noble.

However, he's also a man of the people, generally well liked by your average Joe and a capable military commander (well, we're going to stretch this part a bit). So, Mike Nolan, with a hand in both football nobility and a populist favorite, mirrors two of the most important attributes of Julius Caesar.

Mike Martz is Brutus
Nolan was fired midway through this season, unceremoniously dropped for poor performance. The abruptness of this firing is similar in style to the assassination of Caesar, and although Mike Martz did not hold the pink slip/knife like Brutus did, in my depiction of things I see Martz and Nolan not getting along very well leading up to the deed. Martz' insistence on starting quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan over both Alex Smith and Shaun Hill is suspicious, as was the season-ending injury to Smith right as the season began.

Can we blame this all on Martz? No, but his behind-the-scenes dealings are sure a catalyst for conspiracy theories. Is it possible that, in our little analogy, Martz represents the old guard, himself from a noble coaching tree, a man who wanted to do things like they had always been done in San Francisco- through the air? In fact, Nolan is known as a pass-first kind of coach. Is it possible that Nolan, wanting to win rather than appease tradition, insisted on making Frank Gore and the running game the focus of the offense? Is it possible that this clash- between the old and the new, the air and the ground, the Democracy and the Dictatorship- led Martz to oust Nolan, just as Senator Brutus led the assassination of Julius Caesar?
For the fan who likes San Francisco 49ers tickets, as well as ridiculous historical connection-making, there's more like this in Part II.
